All of our rugs are cleaned by hand. We begin with a thorough dusting and vacuuming, followed by submerging the rug in lukewarm water with a special shampoo made specifically for wool/silk rugs. Then, we thoroughly shampoo/scrub both the front and back of the rug, bringing all the dirt and soil up to the surface. Once this is done, we rinse the rug multiple times until clean. Finally, we extract the clean water remaining on the rugs surface and fan dry laying flat on the ground. We do not hang-dry rugs to prevent running dyes/colors and drooping.
Although spots and stains should always be treated immediately, it is recommended that area rugs should be cleaned at least once a year depending on the amount of accidents and foot traffic they endure.
Never. Not only does steaming not clean an area rug properly, it also damages the wool fibers and pile by hardening the dirt and soil that remains at the foundation; which ruins the rug over time.
Improper vacuuming can cause damage to your rugs. It is important to adjust the vacuum height to the appropriate level to avoid breaking the face yarn and distorting the wool pile. Avoid using beaters and brushes on fringes entirely to avoid preventable wear and damage.
A good quality rug pad helps keep a rug flat on the floor and prevents slipping. Rug padding should be seen as an investment made on your rug; apart from the thick layer of comfort a good quality pad provides, it also filters out dirt from the rugs foundation into the padding which reduces rug wear and extends life. If your rug gets heavy foot traffic or is a loose leaf rug that slides and flips over easily (especially on tile/hard wood) a rug pad is definitely recommended.
Rugs are made of a variety of materials including wool, silk, cotton, jute, and synthetic fibers.
